Dormition Cathedral, Vladimir

The Dormition Cathedral (Russian Успенский собор ) is a city built in the 12th century Russian Orthodox cathedral in Vladimir. At the time of the Grand Duchy of Vladimir - Suzdal she was the most important religious building in northeastern Rus, later it served as a model for other churches, such as the eponymous cathedral in Moscow. Today it serves both as a state museum, as well as the center of the Eparchy of Vladimir. As an important component of the White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The cathedral was built in 1158-1160 by order of the Prince of Vladimir, Andrei Bogolyubsky as a three-nave structure with three apses. The facades are vertical pilasters with Corinthian capitals and horizontally by two rows of blind arcades. From the first frescoes of the Dormition Cathedral scattered fragments are still preserved. The cathedral was decorated in 1408 by Andrei Rublev and Daniil Chorny with new murals. Of these individual portraits of the monumental representation of the Last Judgement are obtained. Most of today's frescoes of the cathedral date from the 19th century. In 1810, next to the cathedral bell tower was built.
