Dorothy Mackaill

Dorothy Mackaill ( born March 4, 1903 in Hull, England; † August 12, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii) was an American actress of the late silent movies and early sound era.

Life

The actress first worked as a dancer and went early 1920s Ziegfeld Follies to the to New York City. It was soon discovered for the film and quickly played a number of major and minor roles, mostly for the company First National, where she rose to become a star of the second series soon. In 1924 she was voted one of the WAMPAS baby stars of the year. With the change to talkies Dorothy Mackaill initially seemed to have a great future, but neither the success of The Office Wife, a romantic comedy in which Mackaill still in love with more than 35 years older than Lewis Stone melodrama Safe in Hell, in the she sacrifices her life as a prostitute for the man she loves and got into trouble with the censor because of the very graphic representation of the execution, directed by William Wellman, helped her to become a real breakthrough. She ended her career in the mid 1930s in some B- movies.
