Douglas (Georgia)

Douglas is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia in the United States and the county seat ( county seat ) of Coffee County.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000), the city had 10,639 inhabitants on a land area of 33.4 km ². The median age was 33.0 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income English ) was ( the national average of the United States: 21,587 U.S. dollars) at 15,652 U.S. dollars. 24.4 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4% ) .45,3 % of residents are African- American.

History

Douglas was founded in 1858. End of the 19th century, the city has experienced significant economic upswing by the railway industry. She is listed with two areas on the National Register of Historic Places, namely with the city center (Downtown) and Gaskin Avenue Historic District. The city was named after the distinguished Senator Stephen Arnold Douglas.
