Douglas Murray (ice hockey)

Douglas Murray ( born March 12, 1980 in Bromma ) is a Swedish professional ice hockey player. Since August 2013, he plays for the Canadiens de Montréal in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender.

Despite its English-sounding name Murray was born in Sweden and a Swedish citizen. The last name comes from the Scottish ancestors of his father. He is also the grandson of the 217 -mer Swedish Hockey national player and multiple World Champion Lars Björn.

Career

Murray decided, although he comes from Sweden to study at an American college. The main reason for the possibility that Hockey was playing with the study to link more closely. In 1999 he began studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Before Murray entered the ice for the first time for the University, he was in the NHL Entry Draft in 1999 to choose from. The San Jose Sharks selected him in the eighth round of 241 on site. Overall, Murray remained four years at Cornell University and improved his stats and leadership from year to year. In his last season he was captain of the team.

The seasons 2003/ 04 and 2004/ 05 Murray spent at the Cleveland Barons, the farm team of the San Jose Sharks, who had brought him in the summer of 2003 on the signing of the contract. Also there was the Swede from season to season consistently good performances and received during the 2005/ 06 season, the first time a call to the NHL team. In his first season, he completed 34 games and posted here a Torvorbereitung. The season 2006/ 07 Murray began back in the American Hockey League with the Worcester Sharks, but also played again in the meantime in San Jose. He also almost two years later received a nomination for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

On March 25, 2013 Murray was transferred to the Pittsburgh Penguins. With the Penguins, he reached the play-offs and failed there until the Conference Finals to the Boston Bruins. In August 2013 Murray joined as a free agent with the Canadiens de Montréal, and signed a one year contract there.

Murray is praised mainly because of his physical strength on the ice. His specialty is called "Open Ice Hits ," a tough but fair body check against your opponent on the open ice.
