Dov Karmi

Dov Karmi (* 1905 in Zhvanets; † 14 May 1962 Tel Aviv) was an Israeli architect.

Life

Karmi was born in 1905 as the son of Hannah and Sholom vineyard in today's Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire. In 1921 he emigrated with his family in the British Mandate of Palestine. He began studying painting at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, but enthusiastic soon for the architecture and began to study architecture at the University of Ghent in Belgium.

1929 Karmi returned to Palestine, settling in Jerusalem and got married. 1932 founded Karmi in Tel Aviv then his own architectural office. Together with other young architects, including Ze'ev Right and Arieh Sharon, they founded their own circle, who was inspired heavily by Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus and the architecture of the country decide in the years after the founding of Israel. The first big success of Carmi was winning a competition for the extension of the cultural center in Tel Aviv. He had submitted together with Ze'ev Right the Draft.

From the mid- 1950s he often worked with his son Ram Karmi, who had joined after studying in his father's architectural firm. Karmi is also the father of the architect Ada Karmi - Melamede.

Awards

1957 Karmi received the first architect to the Israel Prize.
