Draconarius

Draconarius called each cavalryman in the Roman Empire, who led a Draco standard.

The Draco Standarte was an invention of the Iranian Parthians, and was out of the northern Iranian Sarmatians. When the Romans in Late Antiquity, the principle of Kataphraktes took over by the Sarmatians, they took their ensigns.

A Roman Draconarius was mostly armed with a Contus lance Lancer, Contarius called. The Contarii it can be both heavily armored ( Katafracti, Clibanarii ) and to lightly armored horsemen. Roman Draconarii often wore a mask helmet.

Draco standards supporting riders spread from the migrations partly over the Sarmatians partly over the Romans throughout Europe. Goths, Slavs, Huns, Lombards, Byzantines, Avars, Franks, Bulgarians, Rus, Pechenegs, Cumans, and even the Celts and Anglo-Saxons in Britain used the Draco standard in their cavalry.
