Drăgănești-Olt

Draganesti - Olt is a town in Olt County in the Great Wallachia in Romania.

Location

Draganesti - Olt is located in the west of the Wallachian plain on the left bank of the river Olt. The district capital Slatina is located about 35 km north-west.

History

Archaeological investigations have shown that the region of the city has been inhabited since Neolithic times. In the second half of the 1st millennium AD have existed on the territory of today's several small towns that in the Middle Ages three villages - Draganesti, Uibăreşti (later Peretu ) Comani - emerged. Uibăreşti was mentioned in 1475, 1526 and Draganesti Comani 1593 for the first time. 1860 received Draganesti ( with the eingemeindeten place Peretu ) and Comani the status of a municipality. 1908, a hospital was mentioned in Draganesti 1934 appeared a local newspaper. After World War II prefabricated housing were built, laid water pipes and electrified the place. From 1950 to 1968 Draganesti - Olt ( the suffix " Olt " to distinguish them from other towns named Draganesti added ) within the framework of the former administrative divisions of Romania seat of a Rajons. 1968 Draganesti - Olt was declared a city.

The main industries of the city are agriculture and food processing. The Olt River is dammed in Draganesti - Olt to a lake with a water power plant.

Population

In 1831 there were in Draganesti 195, in Peretu 125 and in Comani 103 families. 1885 lived on the territory of the present-day city 3022, during the city survey in 1968 10,560 inhabitants. As of the 2002 census, 12,195 residents were registered in Draganesti - Olt, including 11,342 Romanians and 834 Roma. Approximately 9,000 lived in Draganesti, 3000 in Comani.

Traffic

Draganesti - Olt has a station on the double track and electrified route from Bucharest to Craiova, where including high-speed trains. Several times a day there are bus connections to the district capital Slatina and after Caracal.
