Dragoman, Bulgaria

Dragoman ( Bulgarian Драгоман ) is a town in western Bulgaria. The city is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality in the Sofia Province.

Location

Dragoman is located west of Sofiaebene on the European road 80, about 40 km north-west of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Just north of town are the foothills of the Tschepan Mountains, which is counted to the south-western part of the Balkan Mountains, and the dragoman Lake. Nearby are the towns Sliwniza, Godetsch and Tran.

History

Even in the ancient city went through the important Roman road Via Militaris (also called Via Diagonalis ). In the 8th century the region was under Bulgarian rule. In the 11th century the borderland region between the Bulgarians and Serbs with alternating rule was to be Ottoman in the 14th century. After the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 the city became part of the Principality of Bulgaria. During the Serbian -Bulgarian War of 1885 /86, the city was occupied by Serb forces. After the decisive Battle of Sliwniza the city on 10 November 1885, recaptured.
