Dream Evil is the fourth studio album by the band Dio. It was published on 21 July 1987. After three albums with Vivian Campbell came here for the first time Craig Goldy on guitar used.

Background

After the previous Sacred Heart had been somewhat commercial, Dio returned with the Dream Evil album back to the harder sound of the first two albums. The album was recorded in Los Angeles at the Village Recorder Studio. It was produced by Ronnie James Dio himself. As a singles All The Fools Sailed Away / Over and Love I Could Have Been a Dreamer were released.

The album cover was illustrated by Steve Huston. It shows a sleeping child, on the bedspread a kind of troll seems to be. Under the bed look tentacles, tendrils, snakes, lizard, beetle and a black cat out with bright red eyes. Next to the bed are an open book and a crystal ball. For windows looks the same, dark figure that was already seen on the previous albums into it.

Composition

After the keyboard sound seemed rather more commercial at Sacred Heart, the keyboard produces a rather darker undertone here. The song material is similar to the first few albums. You can find these speed metal songs like Night People, mid-tempo songs like Naked in the Rain and numbers, which are based on the blues, such as Overlove. These are not typical, a ballad entitled to find, namely Fools Sailed Away All the. The guitar riff of the title track also has a certain resemblance to that of Man on the Silver Mountain by Dio's former band Rainbow.

Reception

In Rock Hard, the album was considered a disappointment at the appearance. Reviewer Frank Trojan criticized, Dream Evil to offer little that is new and differs only slightly from the previous works. In the review, which was closed with a rating of 6/ 10 points, stated the editor, Dio had " reached a dangerous point, namely just have to copy itself and so inevitably end in a stalemate. "

Retrospective considerations, however, make the work as an expression of Konstanz dar. So are Chris Doran from Metal Observer, the album, include " the whole neither something new is added or pity [ ... ] it the band".
