DRG Class SVT 877

The combustion railcars 877 (later DB Class VT 04.0 ) was the first diesel -speed railcars of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) and also the first streamlined train in the scheduled use. With him was made the then world's fastest train service from 1933 between Berlin and Hamburg. He was known as Flying Hamburger.

And data development

The two- car trainset coupled together with the former company number 877a / b was established in February 1932 the wagon and Maschinenbau AG Görlitz appointed by the DR ( WUMAG ). He was delivered end of 1932 and approved in February 1933.

A test drive on December 19, 1932 between the Lehrter station and Hamburg Main Station put the high-speed railcars back with a speed record. In 142 minutes the train had mastered the distance of 286 km.

New on the Flying Hamburger, the streamline shape were (this being but the only trainset with deep-drawn front roof remained ), which was developed in the wind tunnel tests, the lightweight construction and the diesel-electric drive. Each of the two cars had a Maybach twelve-cylinder diesel engine G05 with DC generator and electric nose-suspended traction motors connected to it. With a capacity of 2 x 420 hp (2 x 302 kW) at a top speed of 175 km / h was achieved in experimental runs; for the scheduled use of a top speed of 160 km / h was determined. The Maybach G05 engine initially prepared a series of problems, partly due to the much too rigid engine mounting in the motor bogie, partly by the weak -sized crankcase. These problems were eliminated with the development of the G06 as far as possible. Franz Kruckenberg considered this already in the construction of his quick railcar DR 137 155 ( not to be confused with the similarly constructed by him Schienenzeppelin ) and put the engine into a frame suspension rather than in the motor bogie used previously. The Maybach engine is used in its last stage of development than GT06 today in various locomotives of the DB Class V 60.

The train was equipped with a Knorr air brake and a magnetic brake, with whom he was brought from a speed of 160 km / h within 800 meters to stop.

The trainset had 98 seats in two Großraumwagen compartments and a four-seat buffet. As a sign of its exclusivity, he was like the car of the " Rheingold train " painted cream and purple.

Initially, the cream-colored band of windows around was also drawn to the faces on later pictures you can see that the area was also painted around the front window of up to a quarter-circle color separation edge in purple. This was done, first, to customize the appearance of the other high-speed railcars of type Hamburg, Leipzig and Cologne, on the other hand suffered the cream colored front page very quickly under pollution caused by vehicle operation.

The DR 877 was a prototype for further high-speed railcars:

  • The 2-piece design Hamburg DR 137149-152 and 137224-232 and their derived types:
  • The 3-piece design Leipzig DR 137153-154 and 137233-234
  • The 3- part type Cologne DR 137273-278 and 137851-858
  • The 4-piece design Berlin DR 137901-903
  • The 4- part type Munich DR 137904-911 ( not implemented because of the outbreak of war )

The success of these high-speed railcars meant was that in 1935 in Kassel by Henschel & Sohn developed together with the wagon factory Wegmann & Co. the streamlined fairing, but steam engine powered " Henschel -Wegmann train " with comparable benefits and used in long-distance high-speed traffic between Berlin and Dresden.

Use

From 15 May 1933, the trainset wrong schedule between Berlin and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Lehrter station. For the 286 km long distance he needed 138 minutes, a time which was achieved by an ICE train of the Deutsche Bahn AG again until 64 years later in May 1997. During the Second World War, the railcar was turned off. From 1945 he was employed by the French occupying power as passenger and in 1949 returned to the German Federal Railways, the 1951 modernized and classifying him as VT04 000 a / b in purple color. For modernization included the installation of Scharfenberg couplers at both ends in order to use it together with other VT 04 in double or triple traction can. The railcar was 1955/1956 stationed in Hamburg, where he was occasionally used as reinforcing railcars of the Copenhagen Express between Hamburg and Großenbrode Kai. In 1957 he was parked.

Whereabouts

After his secondment, the vehicle was handed over to the Nuremberg Transport Museum, where the railcar has been disconnected. The front half of a railcar was cut in the middle due to lack of space again, the torso with the cab is now on display at the Nuremberg Transport Museum. The section b was scrapped in 1961 AW Nürnberg lack of prospects as well as the remaining half of the section a

After the Berlin-Hamburg route was extended to 2004 for high-speed line, appeared in the DB staff newspaper on April 1, 2005 April Fool's joke, the message, the vehicle was used as a support of ICE connections again, with the color dress already to the ICE scheme was adapted what was to be seen on a photo montage.
