Dripping Springs is a city in Hays County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city lies about 40 km west of Austin on U.S. Highway 290 in the north of the county in the central southeast Texas.

History

The first settlers came here in 1849 and more families settled in the following years in the valleys of Little Barton and Onion Creek. 1857 the town was founded and received its first post office. 1881 Dripping Springs Academy opened its doors.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,548 people in 554 households, and 418 families. The population density was 181.1 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 86.50 % White, 0.26 % African American, 0.52 % Native American, 0.19 % Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander residents from the and 10.59 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.94% were of mixed descent, and 18.73 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 554 households 41.5 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.6 % were married couples living together. 9.7 % had a female householder with no husband, and 24.4% were non-families. 20.9 % of all households were single-person households and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.24 persons to.

29.4 % of the population were under 18 years old, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 30.7 % 25-44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.1 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 105.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 103.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 47,212, and the median income for a family $ 57,880. Males had a median income of $ 40,393 versus $ 30,862 for females.
