Dschang

Province

Dschang is a city in Cameroon. It is the administrative center of the department Menoua in the region Ouest.

Location and population

Dschang is located in the highlands of West Cameroon, in the French speaking part of the country, at an altitude of 1380 m. The city belongs politically to the province Ouest and has around 70,000 inhabitants. The population consists mainly of Bamileke.

Economy and infrastructure

Since the colonial period Dschang is a major agricultural center. Plays a role today, especially the pig. In the city itself there is a post office, banks and gas stations.

The transport connection is via year-round passable slopes, partly over asphalt roads. Taxi or bus connections to Bafoussam and Yaounde.

History

Chang emerged as a regional center in German colonial period by investing a military station within the Foréké - Chefferie, which replaced the former station Fontemdorf as a district seat in May, 1907. Installation and configuration of the station were made by the officer Emil Rausch, who headed the district headquarters until 1914.

By 1912, Chang was the seat of the 8th Company of the Imperial Colonial Army under military administration and was then transferred to the civil administration and 1913 raised to the district office. Even in German time, the first agricultural experiment station and an agricultural school for the indigenous population has been established.

Religion

The majority of the population in Dschang belongs to the Catholic Church. To a greater extent, Protestant denominations and Islam are represented.

Education

Dschang is since 1993 the seat of a university with faculties among others for law and political sciences and agriculture.
