Dude Ranch is the second studio album by the American rock band blink- 182. It was published in the German-speaking area on 5 August 1997 at MCA Records and was the first album of the band, which was also placed in the U.S. album charts.

Formation

Work on the album began in 1996, after the band had signed a new contract with the label MCA Records. Most of the pieces were taken during the previous tour. The recordings began in late 1996 in the Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California.

Artwork

For the design of the cover Victor Gastelum was responsible for the drawings took care of Lou Beach. The cover shows a bull standing to the rear of the viewer and thereby turns his head toward the viewer. The animal wears a fire brand with the band logo. The background consists of a prairie landscape, is also a wooden sign with the album title to see. As producers, they chose Mark Trombino, who worked previously with Jimmy Eat World. In early 1997, the recordings were completed. The mastering took place in Hollywood in Bernie Grundman Mastering. The album was released on 5 August 1997, as the first single Dammit was disengaged.

Criticism

By music critics, the album was discussed mostly positive, on the other hand, the album was rated by only a few critics.

Stephen Thomas Erlewine rated the album at Allmusic very positive and awards 4.5 stars out of 5. He writes that the songwriting skills of the band were not fully developed yet, but there are much better compared to Cheshire Cat already. Nevertheless Erlewine describes the music of the album as well.

Also sputnikmusic.com rated the album 4 stars out of 5 as excellent. Critics Channing Freeman says that the sound is something unique and you can not compare him with the current style of the band.

Charts and Awards

The album was the first that could be placed in the U.S. charts. It could reach number 67. In addition, it was awarded a platinum record in the U.S..
