Work

The work of David Gerstein includes in addition to its known wall metal sculptures smaller objects, paintings, prints and giant sculptures and objects in public places. Thus, the children in Jerusalem enjoy his art in the form of a playground in the park Weil.

In his multi-layered work blurs the boundary between the two dimensions of the painting and the three-dimensionality of sculpture. His works are primarily distinguished by their vibrant colors. Most commonly, the man finds in motion as the central theme of his sculptures and objects. But nature and urbanity play a major role in his work. His works are both biographically, as influenced by the environment in his hometown.

As Gerstein returned at the beginning of the 1970s from America back to Israel, where minimalism and conceptualism dominated:

"When I returned from New York I was quietly very young I immediately began teaching at Bezalel and I had to make a Crucial decision for myself as an artist. Should I turn to what is popular and accepted, meaning the minimalist, conceptual Approaches or go my own way and be less popular, for the moment at least. "

He decided against the popular styles. His success proves him right.
