Duke of Cambridge

Duke of Cambridge ( Duke of Cambridge ) is a named after the city of Cambridge hereditary British title of nobility, which was regularly given to younger members of the royal family, initially as Earl of Cambridge.

Ceremonies

The title was (later King James II ) awarded for the first time the eldest son of Jacob, Duke of York, Charles Stuart ( 1660-1661 ), but a formal Verleihungsakt did not take place. The first " real" ceremony in the Peerage of England in 1664 was a brother of Charles, James Stuart. Jacob was the second son and third child of the Duke of York and his first wife, Anne Hyde. Jacob died young and without heirs and the title lapsed. He was awarded again to Edgar Stuart, fourth son of the Duke of York. Edgar also died young and the title fell back.

Next, the title to the eldest son of the second marriage of the Duke of York with Maria Beatrice of Modena, awarded Charles Stuart ( 1677-1677 ). However, because Karl died at the age of just one month, a formal ceremony took place not more.

The next Duke of Cambridge was George Augustus (subsequently George II of Great Britain), son of Georg Ludwig, Crown Prince of Hanover, Duke of Brunswick -Lüneburg (later George I of Great Britain). As George Augustus succeeded his father as George II to the throne, the title merged with the crown.

The next ceremony was held in the Peerage of the United Kingdom and took place in 1801 Adolphus Frederick, seventh son of King George III. After his death the titles passed to his son George. When he died in 1904 without legitimate heirs, the title fell into disrepair.

The grandson of Adolphus Frederick, Adolphus, Duke of Teck ( a brother of Queen Mary, Spouse of George V ), was in 1917 appointed the Marquess of Cambridge, after he had abandoned his German titles and adopted the surname Cambridge. After his death the titles passed to his son George. This died without a male heir, so the title became extinct.

On the occasion of his wedding to Kate Middleton Prince William, the eldest son of the heir to the throne Prince Charles, awarded on 29 April 2011, the title of Duke of Cambridge, now with the subordinate titles Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.
