Duke Robert of Württemberg

Robert Mary Clement Joseph Philip Duke of Württemberg ( born January 14, 1873 in Merano, † 12 April 1947, Altshausen ) was a German officer and Prince of the Royal House of Württemberg.

Life

Duke Robert was the fourth child of Duke Philipp of Württemberg and of his wife Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria. Thus Robert belonged to the Catholic line of the House of Württemberg. His older brother was the heir to the throne of Württemberg and later Field Marshal Albrecht Duke of Württemberg. Duke Robert grew up in Vienna and was there in 1894 the Matura. As a prince of the royal house had Duke Robert since 1894 until the end of the monarchy in 1918, a mandate in the Württemberg Chamber of lords and was there in person since 1895. From 1904 to 1906 he was represented by his younger brother Ulrich. Already in 1891 joined Duke Robert in the Württemberg army and was later captain in the 2nd Dragoon Regiment. He also served in the army of Austria-Hungary, where he was first lieutenant in the 9th Dragoons ( Archduke Albrecht ). In addition, Duke Robert was also an officer in the Prussian army, and thus belonged to the German army.

On October 29, 1900 married Duke Robert in the Hofburg Chapel in Vienna, the Habsburg princess Maria Immaculata Archduchess of Austria (* 1878, † 1968), daughter of Archduke Karl Salvator of Austria. The marriage remained childless. Duke Robert in 1901 traveled representation for King Wilhelm II of Württemberg to London to keep track of the funeral of Queen Victoria. He represented the King of Württemberg also at the celebration of the coronation of King Edward VII

In World War Duke Robert commanded with the rank of lieutenant general the 26th Cavalry Brigade, which belonged to the 7th Cavalry Division. After the fall of the monarchy in the wake of the October Revolution drew Robert Duke of Württemberg returned to private life after Altshausen. His brother Albert in 1919 moved the residence of the ducal family of Stuttgart from its castle Altshausen. Robert dealt, apparently at the thought of a possible restoration of the monarchy, with the design of construction plans for new castles, abbeys and churches that could never be realized due to the further political development, however. He developed, for example, for the New Castle in Stuttgart during the Second World War, plans to build a " Christ the King Hofpfarrkirche ". He also designed a new Catholic missal as well as uniforms for the servants, but also far from the real possibilities of new uniforms and names for regiments, as well as coat of arms, standards and orders.
