Dun Karm Psaila

Dun Karm Psaila ( born October 18, 1871 in Żebbuġ; † 13 October 1961, in Valletta) was a Maltese writer, poet and priest.

He was born as a child of ordinary people and began with 18 years of writing poetry in Italian. He received his education at the seminary in Mdina. At the age of 23, he was ordained a priest. In addition to his priestly career, he wrote poems continued, increasingly, Malti, his mother tongue. His first novel " Il- habib " ( The friend ) appeared in 1912. Thereafter, Psaila decided only to be written in Maltese. Under the pseudonym DUN KARM ( Dun is the title for priests ) were his poems and prose pieces soon became very popular. They combine national romantic, existential philosophical and religious themes. His visionary expressiveness meets the request of the Maltese people for cultural autonomy and national identity much. He died in 1961, and DUN KARM is now regarded as " il - Malti Poeta ", as Maltese National Poet. A poem by him is the text of the national anthem of Malta L- Innu Malti.
