Duroc (pig)

The Duroc pig is a breed of swine from the United States.

Breeding history

The origins of this ancient breed are unknown. Around 1800 to populations of red pigs in the northeastern United States developed. The modern Duroc pig was 1830 from crosses of Red Jersey pigs from New Jersey and this old Duroc from New York.

Characteristics

  • Color light to dark red
  • Ears partially suspended
  • Large-boned, sows up to 300 kg, boars up to 350 kg
  • Medium body
  • Good muscling
