Düsseldorf-Stockum

Stockum is a northern district of Dusseldorf and belongs to the municipality fifth with 6.70 km ² in area Stockum belongs to the large districts, but has only 5060 inhabitants. The residential areas are mainly concentrated in the eastern section of the district, while the western part mainly through the fairgrounds, the ESPRIT arena and the exhibition parking and floodplains is marked. Due to the proximity to the airport, there are no high-rise development except the trade towers. Predominant are one- and two-family homes and small apartment buildings. In the south of North Park is the Aquazoo.

Location

The border with Lohausen in the north is the A44 to Unterrath the streets along the Red House and Deikerstraße in the east, in the south to Golzheim the Grünewaldstraße and Erich Klausener road and in the west of the Rhine, on the opposite side of the Meerbuscher district Ilverich lies.

Description of the district

Around the Freiligrathplatz are predominantly developed with one-and two -family houses upscale neighborhood Stockums. Noteworthy is the Blumensiedlung, a company incorporated under the Nazis as part of the Empire Exhibition Working People Mustersiedlung.

In addition Stockum is characterized by numerous institutions. Thus, the Düsseldorf Messe is located in Stockum. Opened in 1971 with its new exhibition center (2007) 19 halls with 264,000 m² to around 308,000 m² of exhibition space shall, in conjunction with the parking lots a wide areas of the district. 2007 visited a total of 1.5 million visitors which is about 27,704 exhibitors. At the exhibition center is also the Dusseldorf city hall. Right next to the fair is the North Park and in this Aquazoo. Right next to the congress and exhibition center is the Japanese Garden. North of the exhibition is the multi-functional hall ESPRIT arena ( until June 2009 LTU arena), which is linked with a hotel right on the fairgrounds. Next to it are the Arena -Sportpark, the public Rheinbad with indoor and outdoor pools and gigantic parking lots. The Dusseldorf Fashion House, a nationwide fashion center with over 200 vendors located on 48,000 m² on the Danziger Strasse. The airport is located in the neighboring Lohausen, but is approached primarily through Stockumer area.

History

Settlement remains from the Late Bronze Age are known. A larger Germanic settlement dates from the early Roman Imperial period (ca. 160-260 AD). Dating from around 600-740 AD comes a large cemetery with about 100 burials; the associated settlement may have had 35 inhabitants. First secure mention in the written sources for the years 1090/1120 in a collection of income of the pin Kaiserwerth. A mention of the year 1003, Heribert acquires goods among others in Stochheim / Stochem at the Archbishop is more likely to refer to the place Stockum in Voerde. Stockum existed until the modern era of individual farms. The Stockumer were probably assigned to the church of Holthausen; a chapel in Stockum was built only in 1752, after the Holthausen church was demolished in 1691 due to disrepair.

The town was incorporated in 1909 to Dusseldorf. He was still rural in character - agricultural. At the time of incorporation lived 807 inhabitants in an area of 3.72 km ², but closed the larger part of the rural community Lohausen one. The place consisted of several farms with a small medieval chapel. The the existing structures fell victim to the fairgrounds. An old road ran here at what is today Schnellenburg over the Rhine, the Kaiserwerth and Neuss Association. The quick castle was already mentioned in 1411. In 1913 the city bought the old Dusseldorf ferry and Treidelstation and planned here a new industrial port. 1925, the buildings were demolished, but rebuilt wider because of protests from 1925 to 1926 by city architect Freese. Long before 1900 on the Barmer Karl Hunter, later Bayer AG belonging, for a time an ink factory, also found clay mining and brick- operation instead. The remains of these trades were the construction of the North park to the victim.

Traffic

Stockum is exposed due to the extended facilities in the district as well as the immediate situation at the airport big traffic load. In cities Stockum is connected via the Kaiserswertherstrasse and on the highway Danziger Straße (B 8). In the north there are two connection points to the A44, the airport terminal in neighboring Lohausen is located about a kilometer away.

To public transportation, the district of the city railway lines U78 and U79 as well as several Buslininen is connected.

Structures

  • There are church and parish hall of the Protestant Tersteegen community and an evangelical Seniorenwohnheim to Stockums southern border with Golzheim.
  • The Nelly -Sachs -Haus is a Jewish old people's home and nursing home.
