Dyrøya is one of four uninhabited islands in the Øksnes Vestbygd in Vesterålen. It is a part of the Norwegian Fylke Nordland in the community Øksnes.

The capital of the island is Barkestad which has been abandoned around 1970. The reasons for this are the lack of infrastructure, which also affect the neighboring islands Skogsøya, Tindsøya and Nærøya to look for the modern age.

The former port of call Hurtigruten Barkestad had a very old tradition as a fishing village, but became unprofitable with time. Translated into German, the name of the island " animal island ", indicating a seasonal breeding of pet or reindeer.
