E-flat clarinet

The clarinet is the clarinet with the highest common mood and therefore, with 49 cm, the shortest usual clarinet. The quoted range corresponds to that of the other clarinets, their sound is a fourth higher than that of the B -flat clarinet.

Originally, there was a raft of senior clarinet tunings: the sopranino or piccolo clarinet in A but only rarely found, even in the military band, from which it is derived, the high-G clarinet, there are almost exclusively in the Vienna Viennese folk music and the high clarinets in F and e are no longer being built.

Similar to the pairing of B and A clarinet there are clarinet a clarinet in D as Variant instrument to avoid keys with many signs, but there is hardly usual in the symphony orchestra. An application written for the D clarinet part is usually transposed for Eb clarinet. When speaking of the "little clarinet ", but can be meant both moods.

The piercing sound of the clarinet in the higher registers used in the symphony orchestra to support the piccolos and the high flute tones and makes the tutti orchestra sounds by brilliant. Good players can mitigate the Shrill and Hard of their sound, so that a homogeneous sounding chord set is possible together with the other clarinets. As a solo instrument it is particularly suitable for parody, burlesque effects.

The most famous solo spot, the leitmotif of Till Eulenspiegel (1895 ) by Richard Strauss, however, is not written for the clarinet, but for the D clarinet, and the composer strongly deplores the replacement by the clarinet "in spite of her has been entrusted now in Liszt's Mazeppa and Wagner's ride of the Valkyries an important role. "

The clarinet is considered difficult to play, especially the intonation is problematic. In the orchestra specialists are used for them.
