Eagle Airways

Eagle Airways is a New Zealand regional airline with headquarters and home base in Hamilton. It maintains ten crew bases from Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands ( North Island ) to to Blenheim in the Marlborough Country ( South Island ). It is 100 % owned by Air New Zealand.

History

Eagle Airways was founded in 1969 as a family business by Malcolm Campbell. The origin of the company was a flight school. Flight operations began in the same year with an aircraft charter flights from Hamilton Airport. The beginning was so successful that the fleet increased to 6 units within 18 months.

On 12 September 1973, the line pilot's license was awarded for the routes from Hamilton to Palmerston North, Wanganui and New Plymouth. In 1976, Eagle Airways her first nine seater Piper Chieftain. The use of the fleet consisted of 50% of training aircraft and 50 % of passenger aircraft. 1979 Eagle Airways was licensed for regional flights with 19 -seater machines. For use Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante and came later Fairchild Metroliner.

1983 Air Central, was a flying with three Mitsubishi MU-2 regional airline, which had approached mainly targets on the North Island, taken over. In the same year Eagle Airways was sold to New Zealand Insurance. The flight school was sold and focused on the scheduled and charter and cargo flights. In 1987, the Mutual Group, the Society of NZI. 1989 Air New Zealand wanted to organize its domestic network new and not transferred to profitable domestic routes leading to smaller airlines. Eagle Airways alliance with Air Nelson and founded the basis of today's regional network. In 1989, Air New Zealand 50 % stake in Eagle Airways and in 1992 was the sole owner of the company.

As of 2001, the fleet was upgraded and converted to Raython Beechcraft 1900D.
