Earl of Arundel

Earl of Arundel is the oldest existing earldom and probably the oldest existing titles in the UK.

Title holder is the respective Duke of Norfolk, it is used as a courtesy title of his heirs. The title Earl of Arundel was created in 1138 for William d' Aubigny. Often, the Earls of Arundel and Earl of Sussex were, until this title fell into disuse middle of the 13th century. Around the same time, the county passed to the originally Breton FitzAlan family, whose younger branch of the house of Stuart, was the Scotland reigned later.

The last Earl of the FitzAlan family, Henry FitzAlan was involved in the Ridolfi conspiracy, should be brought to the English throne with Mary Stuart, which the Earl lifelong house arrest brought. The same Earl got after Mary's death, the rosary and prayer book, which they carried with him at her execution. Both are located at the Arundel relics owned by the Duke of Norfolk.

According to tradition, the owner of Arundel Castle and Earl of Arundel should be what of King Henry VI. was also determined, but was not always the case. Some of the Lords of Arundel Earl of Arundel were not, but are listed in the following list; in other sources, some of the following Earls are not included and they also assume that the title was assigned several times.

The FitzAlan - Howard Estate is a different time from the list numbering of the Earls of Arundel. The d' Aubignys got the first award with the numbers 1 to 5, the family died with Hugh d' Aubigny from. The title was re-created later for Richard FitzAlan, the great-grandson of Isabel d' Aubigny, the wife of John FitzAlans. Richard FitzAlan was the 1st Earl of Arundel from this family.

MA Tierney, the chaplain of the Duke of Norfolk, wrote in 1834 in his book on the Earls of Arundel, that the Earldom initially belonged to the house Montgomery Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, was one of the army commander William the Conqueror, and was in addition to several hundred other goods with the fief of Arundel, with the condition that he build a castle there. Montgomerie is believed that he is the builder of wooden buildings on those still existing moth, which dominates the River Arun. Montgomery and two of his sons are often counted as the first holder of the county, but not as Earls.

With the death of the 19th Earl in 1580 the title passed to Philip Howard, the eldest son of Thomas, who later became Duke of Norfolk, and the only daughter of the last Earl of the FitzAlan family. The new Earl was soon involved in a conspiracy against Queen Elizabeth I, and the title was not established until the reign of King James I again. The 23rd Earl received in 1660 the title of Duke of Norfolk back, and since then the Dukedom and the earldom be performed in the same line.
