Earl of Dunmore

Earl of Dunmore is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the family Murray.

Award

The title was awarded to Lord Charles Murray, second son of John Murray, 1st Marquess of Atholl in 1686. He served as a general in the British army.

Subordinate title

Subordinate title, also in the Peerage of Scotland, are Viscount of Fincastle and Lord Murray of Blair, Moulin and Tillimet. Both titles were awarded simultaneously with the earldom.

The eldest son of the Earl respective leads the courtesy title Viscount Fincastle.

The fifth Earl was active as a politician. He got a firm seat in the House of Lords, he received in 1831 the dignity of a Baron Dunmore in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. This title became extinct in 1980 with the death of the ninth Earl.

The present Earl is a descendant of the first Marquess of Atholl, a possible heir to the title of Marquess of Atholl and its subsidiary titles.

Presumptive heir ( Heir Presumptive ) is the brother of the present Earl, Geoffrey Charles Murray ( b. 1949 ). The only son of the present Earl 's adopted, and therefore can not inherit the title.
