Earl of Perth

Earl of Perth is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of Scotland, which is supported by the Drummond family.

The respective Earl is ex-officio Chief of the Clan Drummond. Ancestral home of the family is Stobhall at Perth in Perth and Kinross.

Award

The title was for James Drummond, 4th Lord Drummond, created in 1605. This had been ambassador of Scotland in Spain.

In 1716 the title was, however, the fourth Earl revoked, after he had participated in the Jacobite uprising of 1715. The Earl and his heirs claimed the title, however, continue.

After the rebellion of 1745, the entire property was confiscated. In 1783 this, but not made ​​the denial of the title reversed. This was done until 1853 by Act of Parliament.

Subordinate title

The great-grandfather of the first Earl John Drummond was Justiciar of Scotia have been. He was raised in 1408 to Lord Drummond of Cargill. This title is listed as subordinate title since the creation of the earldom.

1911 inherited the eleventh Viscount Strathallan the title of Earl of Perth. Since that time, this title, which was created in 1686, and this subsidiary title of Lord Drummond of Stobhall ( created in 1605 ), and Lord Drummond of Cromlix ( created 1686) from the respective Earl out as subordinate title. The further supported the dignity of a Lord Maderty ( created in 1609 ) had inherited in 1692, the second Viscount Strathallan.

More titles

The fourth Earl, the earldom was revoked, was awarded by the Jacobite pretender to the throne James Stuart the title of Duke of Perth, who belonged to the Jacobite Peerage, but like all Jacobite title is not officially recognized.

1797, the then Titelprätendent to Lord Perth, Baron Drummond of Stobhall was raised to the Peerage of Great Britain. This title became extinct, however three years later, when he died without a male descendant.

The claim to the title was transferred after his death to the Duke of Melfort. This title, which was also created in 1692 in the Jacobite Peerage, has been dormant since the death of the fourteenth Earl in 1902, as the heir had not established the right to it. This also applies to the Dukedom downstream simultaneously created Jacobite title Marquess of Forth, Earl of Isla and Burtisland, Viscount of Rickerton and Lord Castle Mains and Galston, and also this dignity subsidiary title Viscount of Melfort and Lord Drummond of Gillestoun ( created 1685) and Earl of Melfort, Viscount of Forth and Lord Drummond of Riccartoun, Castle Mains and Gilstoun ( created 1686), which all belong to the peerage of Scotland.
