Earl of Powis

Earl of Powis is a hereditary British title of nobility, which is run by a branch of the Herbert family. The title has been awarded three times. The name of the peerage refers to the medieval Welsh Principality of Powys.

The family seat is Powis Castle in Welshpool, Montgomeryshire, Wales.

Ceremonies

For the first time the title in the Peerage of England in 1674 was awarded to William Herbert, 3rd Baron Powis. As a leading Catholic nobleman of these joined after the Glorious Revolution to the Jacobites; the new British government declared him a traitor then, stripping him his title. His son was on the Jacobite cause, and obtained the restoration of title and related honors. The line died out in 1748 then.

In the same year was awarded the title, well, awarded in the Peerage of Great Britain for the second time, and indeed to the relatives Henry Herbert. With his son George died in 1801 from the second line.

Three years later, in 1804, was given the title, this time awarded in the Peerage of the United Kingdom for the third time: Since Henrietta, daughter of Henry Herbert and heiress of the family, the title itself could not lead; was her husband, Edward Clive, 2nd Baron Clive, son of the India - hero Robert Clive, appointed as the new Earl of Powis '. Since her son had taken his name and coat of arms as a condition for the legacy of uncle, remained the Earldom in the Herbert family.

Subordinate title

The grandfather of the first Earl, William Herbert, the first award was in turn a longtime parliamentarian. He was therefore filed a 1629 Baron Powis in the Peerage of England. The title became extinct with the earldom.

The first Earl of the second award since 1743 has already led to the title of Baron Herbert of Chirbury. With the earldom in 1748, the subsidiary title Viscount Ludlow and Baron Powis were awarded. Finally, the first Earl in 1749 was still the dignity of a Baron Herbert of Chirbury and Ludlow with a particular succession. All titles that belonged to the Peerage of Great Britain, extinct, as the second Earl died without descendant entitled to inherit.

In the third presentation of the first Earl had from his father the title of Baron Clive of Plassey in the County of Clare, inherited before his elevation, which belonged to the peerage of Ireland. In 1794 he was created Baron Clive then, of Walcot in the County of Shropshire, was made in the Peerage of Great Britain. Finally, the title of Baron Powis, of Powis Castle Baron Herbert, of Chirbury in the County of Shropshire, and Viscount Clive of Ludlow were the earldom in the County of Montgomery, in the County of Shropshire awarded. They belong to the Peerage of the United Kingdom. The heir takes the courtesy title Viscount Clive.

The first Earl of the first award was named Marquess of Powis with the subordinate title Viscount Montgomery in 1687. He later received the Jacobite, not recognized in England title Duke of Powis. All title extinguished, as the third Marquess 1748 unmarried died.
