Earl of Wessex

The title Earl of Wessex is a British peerage, which was only awarded twice.

The first award was presented by Knut the Great of Godwin of Wessex. After his death the titles passed to his son Harald. He died in 1066 in the Battle of Hastings and the title became extinct.

The second ceremony took Queen Elizabeth II in favor of her fourth child and third son Edward on the occasion of his marriage to Sophie Helen Rhys- Jones in 1999. Actually, it was expected that Edward would receive the title of Duke of Cambridge. But because Edward is only ranked seventh in order of the British heir to the throne, he was awarded the under the title of Dukes title of Earl. The Royal House has announced that he will later receive the title of Duke of Edinburgh, the even his father, Prince Philip wears.
