Earth Summit 2002

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (English World Summit on Sustainable Development, WSSD) was held from 26 August to 4 September 2002 in Johannesburg / South Africa with about 20,000 delegates from governments, business, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local communities instead. The NGOs found themselves in the Congress, " A Sustainable World is Possible " (Eng. " a sustainable world is possible") together.

Predecessor of the summit was the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development ( UNCED) held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro / Brazil Conference, was the successor of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, again in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.

The aim of the summit

The previous conference in Rio is considered a milestone in global environmental and development policies. The Action Programme Agenda 21 recommendations for action for sustainable development were made.

The aim was next to the accounting of Agenda 21, the plan for the implementation of Agenda 21 (New York 1997), and the national sustainable development strategies, setting forth new objectives and measures for sustainable development until 2015/ 2017.

Results

Despite major shortcomings in the implementation, there were hundreds of projects, which have been shown for example in Ubuntu Village. Simultaneously, the IGC was mostly struggled for hours to reach a consensus wording in meetings.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development ended with the adoption of a Political Declaration of the Heads of State and Government (The Johannesburg Declaration on Sustainable Development ) and a 65 -page Johannesburg Action Plan ( Plan of Implementation ).

The main result of this World Summit was that the way forward for the implementation of the concept of sustainable development was defined by new priorities, targets and implementation programs. For the first time, quantifiable goals, particularly the Millennium Development Goals included in the action plan.

Important new goals:

  • By the year 2010, the decline of biodiversity ( species diversity ) should be significantly reduced.
  • By the year 2015, the number of people that are reduced by 500 million worldwide receive all children a basic education and the proportion of people without access to basic sanitation halved in absolute poverty ( less than € 1 per day) be.
  • By the year 2020Vorlage: Future / In 5 years, minimizing the health and environmental impact in the production and use of chemicals is to be achieved.

Implementation problems

The procurement of substantial financial resources to implement the Millennium Development Goals has been carried by many individuals and institutions international initiative for a Global Marshall set plan to the destination. Without additional aids the growing gap between words and deeds can not be closed, so the consensus. With the current resources one of the objectives is not possible.

Achievement of objectives

In the opening speech of the 10th Conference of the Parties ( COP10 ) to the Convention on Biological Diversity said Jochen Flasbarth, the head of the German Federal Environment Agency, in October 2010 that the world community has not achieved the goal of halting the loss of biodiversity. Nevertheless, progress in the protection of species were recognized as losses of forest areas have decreased in some regions and many countries have developed national strategies for the protection of biodiversity. As an example, he cited the 2007 adopted by the German Federal Cabinet National Strategy on Biological Diversity.
