Earth Summit

The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (english United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, UNCED, often referred to as the Earth Summit or Rio Summit ) was held from 3 to 14 June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro instead. It is considered a milestone for the integration of environment and development efforts and was since the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm (1972), the first major international conference, which discussed environmental issues in a global context.

Also, concerning the participation of civil society organizations in international processes put the Earth Summit new standards. A total of 2400 representatives of non-governmental organizations ( NGOs) attended the conference, more than 17,000 people at the parallel NGO Forum held involved.

Important results of UNCED, the Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, the Framework Convention on Climate, the " Forest Principles " and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

In the succession process of the Rio Conference, the Commission on Sustainable Development ( Commission on Sustainable Development, CSD) was established to monitor the implementation process of the conference results.

As a follow-up conferences 1997, the Rio 5 conference in New York and 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg took place. From 20 to 22 June 2012, a summit took place in Brazil with Rio 20 held again, which ran on Sustainable Development under the title of the United Nations Conference.
