East Greenwich is a city and the county seat of Kent County, Rhode Iceland, United States. It is the most prosperous city in Rhode Iceland.

Geography

The town is located just west of Narragansett Bay on the southern edge of the Providence Metropolitan Area, a metropolitan area on the Atlantic Coast with 1.5 million inhabitants around Providence, about 40 km south-west of Boston and 200 miles north-east of New York. It is well connected to the road, next to some State Routes in and around the metropolitan area Interstate 95 runs directly north past it.

North of the city, the dense development of the Metropolitan Area begins its southern and western hinterland is largely densely forested, although numerous settlements in the immediate surrounding area west of East Greenwich break through the forest. The city owns the Bay of Maskerchugg River a natural harbor.

Population

At the 2000 census, 12,948 residents were counted. Of these, almost 96 % white and 2.5 % Asian. The per capita income was 38 593 U.S. dollars; 4.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.

History

The land of the later town was originally inhabited by the Pequot. Charles II acquired the land in 1644 for the British Crown. The town of East Greenwich was founded in 1677 and named after Greenwich, England. Until 1854 East Greenwich was one of the five main cities of Rhode Iceland. The General Assembly, which met in East Greenwich, used the local courthouse, this is the town hall today.

1775 was created in East Greenwich with the deployment of two armed ships, one of the earliest American official delegations of ships to protect the waters around New England and the hijacking of enemy ships. This administrative act of the U.S. Congress is regarded as the birth of the United States Navy.
