East Melanesian Islands

As Ostmelanesische Islands (English East Melanesian Islands ), also Solomons - Vanuatu - Bismarck moist forests are referred to in the biogeography part of Melanesia.

The region is one of the biodiversity hotspots and is one of the Global 200 ecoregions. It includes the Bismarck Archipelago (including the Admiralty Islands ) with the main islands of New Britain and New Ireland, the Solomon Islands, the New Hebrides and the Banks and Torres Islands. In total, there are about 1,600 islands. Politically, this area covers the eastern part of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

The Ostmelanesische islands are in turn divided into five ecoregions:

  • Admiralty Islands lowland rainforests
  • New Britain - New Ireland lowland rainforests
  • New Britain - New Ireland montane rainforests
  • Solomon Islands rainforests
  • Vanuatu rainforests
