Eau de Cologne

Eau de Cologne or Original Eau de Cologne is the name for a typical Cologne scented water. In contrast to the original Eau de Cologne Eau de Cologne is a protected designation of origin and registered at the German Patent and Trademark Office Cologne manufacturer.

History

Originally built in the 18th century, the Eau de Cologne Johann Maria Farina the company is compared to the Jülich Square. The Italian perfumer Johann Maria Farina (1685-1766) created in 1709 from oils of lemon, orange, bergamot, mandarin, lime, cedar and grapefruit and herbs a fragrance water it in honor of his adopted hometown of " Eau de Cologne " in a letter from 1742 so named for the first time. The house " Farina opposite " thus assumed the appellation, the French officers the Eau Admirable had added and thus became the inventor of the " Eau de Cologne ", which is still produced by the company in an unchanged recipe.

The world's most famous Original Eau de Cologne is the 4711, whose name is taken from the former house number of the head office of the company Muelhens GmbH & Co. KG on Glockenstrasse. It has been manufactured since the early 19th century by Wilhelm Mühlens in Cologne. On 12 December 2006, the perfume and cosmetics company Mäurer & Wirtz, the brand has taken over 4711 of the of the Procter & Gamble belonging Muelhens GmbH & Co. KG.

Both Cologne waters from Cologne thus among the oldest still produced perfumes in the world.

An example of a historically significant colognes producers outside of Cologne, Joseph Maria Farina (* December 3, 1785; † January 19, 1864 ), who immigrated to Paris, where in 1806 under the name " Jean Maria Farina, Paris " a véritable Eau de Cologne produced. 1862 took over the perfume company Roger & Gallet, founded the same year by Armand Roger and Charles Gallet Paris company and has been that way for competitors cologne market. Now belonging to L ` Oreal Group is available today.
