Eaubonne

Eaubonne is a commune with 24,300 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Val- d'Oise in the Île- de -France region.

Location

The municipality is located in very densely populated suburban area of Paris, about 15 kilometers north of Paris.

Etymology

The community name Eaubonne (Eng. Good Water ) is the French translation of the Latin name of the place, Aqua Bona. The name was given the city from Roman legionaries because of the good water quality.

History

In Roman times the place was on a military road which led from Paris to Le Havre. Eaubonne was first mentioned in a decree of King Dagobert I in 635, the church has long been in the possession of the Abbey of Saint -Denis, before it received the lords of Montmorency in the 11th century. In the 17th century, the lords of Condé received ownership. In the 18th century, Joseph -Florent Le Normand de Mézières was given the place and developed it. In the 19th century it had 15 castles and palaces. With the construction of the railway began in the middle of the 19th century a rapid urbanization.

Townships

The municipality is divided into five boroughs: Flammarion in the northwest, JJ. Rousseau in the northeast, Mont- d'Eaubonne in the center, Paul Bert in the south and Cerisaie - Jean Macé in the West. Eaubonne forms the canton of the same name.

Twinning

Twinning exist to Matlock (England) and Bude home in Germany.

Attractions

  • The Château de la Chesnaie ( Monument historique ) was built in 1766 in the style of Louis XV. Lived here in the 18th century, the Countess of Houdetot and often received Jean -Jacques Rousseau. This relationship is based Rousseau's epistolary novel Julie or the New Heloise.
  • The Petit Château was up in 1776 by Claude- Nicolas Ledoux built 1772 ( Monument historique ).
  • The Hôtel de Mézières was erected about 1762 ( Monument historique ).
  • In the Rue Hennocque is the home of Paul Éluard. The surrealist writer lived here for several years and was home to 1923 also the artist Max Ernst.

Traffic

The station Ermont - Eaubonne is breakpoint on the Transilien to Paris Gare du Nord and Paris -Saint- Lazare train station and the RER line C.

Eaubonne is only about three miles from the A15 and the A115. About the Boulevard du intercommunal Parisi Paris can be reached in 15 minutes by car.
