Eckley, California

Contra Costa County

06-21400

Eckley was a city in Contra Costa County, California, which served as the Carquinez Strait crossing the ferry port before the Carquinez Bridge was built. She lay on the Southern Pacific Railroad, about seven kilometers northwest of Martinez, about three meters above the sea level. After the bridge was built, the place was abandoned to decline and by the end of the 20th century left Eckley the last residents who previously lived by farming and pastoral economy. Most of the remaining population moved to Crockett. Eckley was named after Commodore John L. Eckley, who founded a marina in the bay.
