École supérieure de biotechnologie Strasbourg

The École supérieure de biotechnology Strasbourg ( ESBS ) is a French institution of higher education in Illkirch in Greater Strasbourg, which in 1982 as an autonomous institute within the University of Strasbourg ( University of Strasbourg I, Louis- Pasteur ) was established and offers the international course on biotechnology.

In 1988, the ESBS making them since the Écoles Européennes of Universités du Rhin Supérieur signed the instigation of Professor Werner Arber, Nobel Laureate (medicine) and rector of the University of Basel compiled Convention establishing a European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities ( EUCOR ) (European schools of Upper Rhine Universities ) counts. As part of this cooperation, the ESB Strasbourg is supported by:

  • The Albert -Ludwigs -Universität Freiburg im Breisgau,
  • The University of Basel,
  • The University of Strasbourg (until 2009: Louis Pasteur University ), which is assigned administratively the ESBS

Course of studies

The degree program in Biotechnology at the ESBS lasts three years, which are not classified as common in Germany in the summer and winter semester. Apply Students can come up with a bachelor's degree in biology, biotechnology, chemistry or other natural or engineering science. The selection of the 40 approved per year students via interviews at the four partner universities.

The training is in three languages , so that candidates alike need good knowledge in German, English and French. Most of the courses take place in Strasbourg, but the other participating universities are also lining lectures and internships.

The study concludes with an eight-month thesis. As a conclusion, the students get a German or Swiss Diploma in Biotechnology and the French Diplôme d' Ingénieur degree s biotechnology. In the near future, the addition of Master's degree is also firm plans to ensure the international competitiveness of the course further.

ESBS is a multicultural institution, which so far is unique in its form. The goal is the education of students in specialist biotechnology in an international atmosphere. The tri-lingual structure of the courses is made possible by the participation of French, German and Swiss universities. A maximum of 40 students are selected each year, making close contact with the faculty members is achieved.

Furthermore, the ESBS collaborated with industry. Scientists from various companies support the training and provide insight into the practical work of biotechnologists. In addition, it is up to the student to produce the 8 -month diploma work in various companies or in any research institutes.

One of the main differences of ESBS to other universities is the program of study. All major large fields of biotechnology are treated therein whereby students keep open to all possibilities without stipulations to the end of the course. Thus they are also also particularly suitable for interdisciplinary work. The central components of teaching are various areas of applied biology, math and physics knowledge base and engineering sciences.

History

ESBS was founded in 1982 by Professors Jean -Pierre Ebel and Pierre Chambon modeled after the French engineering schools and officially registered in 1987 by the Ministry of National Education and Research. In 1994, she moved from the University Louis Pasteur Strasbourg I into a new building in Strasbourg Illkirch district to be part of the API pole on the local technology campus. Since that time include numerous independent research labs to the school and the student capacity was expanded.
