eCos

ECos ( embedded configurable Abbreviation for operating system ) is a free real-time operating system for embedded systems, which is supported by the GNU open source development systems. The eCos license allows developers full access to all parts of the eCos code, allowing the free development of the system.

As with real-time operating systems common to eCos does not offer any development environment, but requires the setting up of development tools on a Windows or Linux system. The development environment includes at least the GCC compiler, the gdb debugger, and the binutils.

A strength of eCos is its configuration system, which allows the user to compile their own sleek application-specific system in which only the needed functions are integrated ( scalability, ...). This approach is resource-limited embedded system benefited greatly.

By supporting a variety of users eCos has been continuously developed and is available for a growing number of platforms. The current version 3.0 supports eCos as the target system processor architectures ARM, Hitachi H8300, Intel x86, MIPS, Matsushita AM3x, Motorola 68k, PowerPC, SuperH, SPARC, NEC V8xx, OpenRISC and Nios II
