The party was founded by a family- embossed circle around his brother Abdala Bucaram and refers to the social reform program Roldos ', who wanted to use, among others, the revenues of oil production in the country for poverty reduction and literacy in the early 1980s. Such a policy was described by Bucaram and his colleagues as " roldosistisch ". The party is also the legacy of Assad Bucarams, an uncle of Abdala, committed, who had headed the leader of the Fuerzas Populares de Concentración the successful addition of the Frente Nacional Velasquista populist party of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Roldosistische party had their support initially, especially in the informal settlement resulting from poor neighborhoods of the largest city in Ecuador, Guayaquil. Bucaram won here followers by promising infrastructure (electricity, water, roads, schools, etc. ) for this quarter and a populist distributed gifts.

His presidency, however, was more influenced by unpredictable actions of the President and nepotism than -planned policy. It lasted just 186 days. He was eventually deposed by Parliament after it came to major social protests against the planned abolition of subsidies for electricity and gas and the generally circulating corruption, embezzlement and Nepotismusvorwürfe. Bucaram fled again to Panama, where he still lives today. Although for some years he no longer is an official president is still the leading head of his party.

In the presidential elections of 1998 the multimillionaire Alvaro Noboa ran for PRE and defeated in the second round Jamil Mahuad ( DP. After the election fell out Bucaram and Noboa, whereupon Noboa founded his own party, the Partido Acción Nacional Renovador Institucional ( PRIAN ).

The party was instrumental in helping to decide unconstitutional in December 2004, the National Congress, the replacement of 27 of the 31 judges of the Supreme Court post. The appointment of a new Supreme Court with PRE, PRIAN and the party of the incumbent president Gutiérrez, PSP, related judges meant that the existing charges against Abdala Bucaram was declared null and void and this was able to return to Ecuador. But it also led to large protests that eventually ended in the dissolution of the Supreme Court, the fall of President Gutiérrez and the renewed flight Bucarams to Panama. Several members of the PRE then left the party or were expelled from the Congress, so that the parliamentary group still consisted of ten members in October 2006.
