Ed Garland

Ed Garland ( * as Edward Bertram Garland on January 9, 1895 in New Orleans, † 22 January 1980 Los Angeles ) was an American jazz bassist of the New Orleans Jazz. He played with Freddie Keppard, King Oliver and Kid Ory.

Life and work

Edward Garland was " Ed Garland " and sometimes called " Montudie Garland ". Around 1910, he played bass drum and tuba in brass bands, as in Frankie Dusons Eagle Band. He also worked in the Excelsior Brass Band and Manuel Perez's Imperial Orchestra. He played in the bands of the early New Orleans jazz, then went to Chicago where he played with Emmanuel Perez, Freddie Keppard, Lawrence Duhe, Joe "King" Oliver and others. In 1921, he was followed by "King" Oliver to California, where he continued to live. In 1944, he appeared during the "Revival Era" of traditional jazz up again and was a member of the band of Kid Ory, took with him on records and performed in radio broadcasts. In 1957 he visited Europe with him; He also worked with Earl Hines, Turk Murphy and other musicians in California.
