Edgar, King of Scotland

Edgar ( Etgair mac Maíl Coluim; * 1074, † 1107 ) was Scottish king of 1097 to his death. He was the third son of Malcolm III. and his second wife, who in 1251 by Pope Innocent IV canonized Margaret of Scotland, was born. He was also known as Edgar the Peaceful.

He ascended the throne, succeeding his uncle Donald III. and his older brother Edmund, who had ruled together and were driven out by an Anglo -Norman army from the throne. Edgar's half-brother Duncan II had seized power already in May 1094 but died only six months later on the battlefield.

Unlike Donald and Edmund Edgar sought political again the proximity to the Norman kingdom ruled England. Lastly, it was his father Malcolm III. been a friend of England, and his mother Margaret was even English. He promoted the settlement of Norman vassals in the south of Scotland, strengthening the influence of England. In addition, he renounced in favor of Norway to the Hebrides and the Kintyre peninsula. Edgar died unmarried and childless and was buried in the Abbey of Dunfermline.

Under Alexander I, Edgar's younger brother, Scotland was further weakened. The influence of England increased not least because Alexander was the brother of the English king.
