Edgar Rubin

Edgar John Rubin ( born September 6, 1886 in Copenhagen, † May 3, 1951 in Holte / Rudersdal Municipality ) is a Danish psychologist and phenomenologist who was known for his studies on figure-ground perception. According to him, the " Rubinsche cup " and is named " Rubinsche Vase". In Germany the work Rubins were adapted primarily from the Gestalt theory. Rubin studied in Copenhagen with Harald Høffding and Alfred Georg Ludvig Lehmann. He received his doctorate in 1915 with Synsoplevede Figurer. Studier i psykologisk analysis ( German translation appeared in 1921: Visually perceived figures). He then went to Germany, where he spent three years at GE Müller worked in Göttingen. In 1922 he returned to Copenhagen, stepping succession Lehmann as Professor and Director of the Psychological Laboratory of the University of Copenhagen and practiced this work until his death in 1951. 1924-1935 Rubin was co-editor of the Journal of Psychology. He was President of the Danish Society for Philosophy and Psychology and President of the 10th International Congress of Psychology.
