Edgar Syers

Edgar Syers with his wife at the Olympic Games 1908

Edgar Morris Wood Syers ( born March 18, 1863 in Brighton, † February 16, 1946 in Maidenhead ) was a British figure skater who started in a single run and pair skating.

Career

Syers is considered a pioneer of the British Eiskunstlaufes and brought a new, more fluid style to the UK. He was General Secretary of the British Figure Skating Association and figure skating coach.

In the individual race he won at the World Championships 1899 in Davos the bronze medal behind Gustav hill and Ulrich Salchow and married in the same year the nearly twenty years younger than Madge Syers. At the age of 45, he joined with her, who was also his figure skating student, at the Olympic Games 1908 in pair skating and won her Olympic bronze behind Anna Hubler and Heinrich Burger and Phyllis and James H. Johnson. Thus he became the oldest skaters in Olympic history to win a medal. Early as 1902 and 1904 he had won with his wife, the unofficial pair of running world championships.
