History

It was founded in 1911 by Gaston Gallimard publishing house, which, together with André Gide and Jean Schlumberger had the idea of the then three- year-old magazine Nouvelle Revue Française to affiliate a book publisher. The first three books - L' Otage ( The Hostage ) by Paul Claudel, Isabelle by André Gide and La Mère et l' enfant by Charles -Louis Philippe - was published in June 1911 the publishing house Les Éditions de la designation Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF ). Hence the stylized logo derives nrf, which can still be found today on many titles of the publisher.

After the Second World War, the Série noire ( " Black Series " ) was developed by Marcel Duhamel in the Gallimard publishing house founded a French series of detective novels of American origin, the so-called " thrillers ". This independent, French-influenced genre was largely responsible for the rapid development of novel noir in France.

The Éditions Gallimard today, led by the grandson of the founder, Antoine Gallimard. According to The Guardian Éditions Gallimard benefited even more in 2000 by André Gide, who have created almost as a talent scout of the best " backlist " in the international publishing business.
