Edmund Hirst

Sir Edmund Langley Hirst ( born July 21, 1898 in Preston, Lancashire, † 29 October 1975, in Edinburgh) was a British chemist.

Hirst was the owner of the Forbes Chair of Organic Chemistry at Edinburgh University. From 1959 to 1964 he was president of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

In 1934 he synthesized together with Norman Haworth for the first time the vitamin C.
