Édouard Biot

Édouard Constant Biot ( born July 2, 1803 in Paris, † March 12, 1850 in Paris) was a French engineer and sinologist.

Life and work

Édouard Biot was the son of the mathematician and physicist Jean -Baptiste Biot. After training at the Lycée Louis -le- Grand, he was accepted in 1822 at the École polytechnique, but decided not to enter the school and continue his studies on his own. 1825 and 1826, he accompanied his father as an assistant on a scientific journey to Italy, Illyria and Spain.

After his return to France, he initially pursued a career in begriffenenen under construction railway industry. In 1827 he acquired along with Marc Seguin, the concession for the construction of the railway line from Lyon to Saint- Étienne. After completion of this project in 1833, he studied classical Chinese at Stanislas Julien at the Collège de France. After he had written numerous essays on Chinese astronomy, mathematics, geography, history, society and administration, he was in 1847 appointed a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. He also was a member of the Asiatic Society in London and Paris and other learned societies.

After three years of marriage his wife died 1846. From the subsequent illness, he could not recover and died four years later at the age of 46 years.

Édouard Biot wrote one of the first manuals on the construction of railways, the Manuel du constructeur the chemins de fer (1834 published ), as well as numerous essays on Chinese culture, one of which appeared most in the Journal asiatique. He also translated in French, both technical and Sinological works: a treatise on machines and factories of the Englishman Charles Babbage and the Chinese administration list Le Tcheou -li, ou Rites of Tcheou from the 11th century BC, which belongs to the Book of Rites. His works have still not lost their importance.
