Edouard Brunner

Edouard Brunner ( born February 24, 1932 in Istanbul, † June 24, 2007 in Nyon ) was a Swiss diplomat said.

Life

Brunner studied at the University of Geneva Law and completed his studies in 1954. In 1956 he entered the service of the Swiss Foreign Ministry. At the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE ) in 1975 he was at the signing of the Helsinki Act case.

Under Foreign Minister Pierre Aubert Brunner in 1980 was appointed Head of Political Division 1 in the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1984 Secretary of State. Aubert's successor René Felber offset the top diplomat Brunner as the Swiss ambassador to Washington first, then to Paris.

From 1991 to 1993 he was Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the Middle East from 1993 to 1997 in Georgia and therefore for the Abkhazia conflict.

Brunner, who generally is regarded as one of the most influential Swiss diplomats of the post-war era, died after a long illness at the age of 75 years.
