Life and work

Édouard Colonne attended the Paris Conservatoire from 1856 and then became first violinist of the orchestra of the Opéra de Paris. 1873 won him the music publisher Georges Hartmann as the head of which he founded at the Théâtre de l' Odéon National Concert, which had the goal of making the works of French composers known to a wide audience. Although the first season of works by César Franck ( Rédemption ) and Jules Massenet had ( Marie- Magdeleine ) great success, Hartmann was forced to abandon due to financial problems.

Then Colonne founded his own orchestra, the Association Artistique des Concerts Colonne, which was located at the Théâtre du Châtelet. In addition, forgotten works such as The Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz were rediscovered again, even the works of foreign contemporary composers such as Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss came on the game board. The orchestra invited conductors such as Felix Mottl large and Felix Weingartner, and composers such as Gustav Mahler, Tchaikovsky, Claude Debussy, Edvard Grieg, Richard Strauss and Sergei Prokofiev came to perform their works. Even the great soloists followed his invitation, such as Pablo de Sarasate, Raoul Pugno and Eugène Ysaÿe.

Colonne went with his orchestra, which he headed until his death in 1910, also on tour throughout France and abroad. He was succeeded by Gabriel Pierné.
