Edward Arthur Maund

Edward Arthur Maund (* 1851, † March 17 1932 in Hampstead ) was an explorer of Africa and Rhodesian pioneer.

Life

He received his education at Hurstpierpoint College, where he ( 1872-1873 ) worked as a vice principal and later enrolled in 1873 at Peterhouse, Cambridge University a. He emigrated to South Africa where he played an active role in building British settlements in Rhodesia.

He served in the military unit Bechuanaland Field Force under Sir Charles Warren during the Warren Expedition (1884/1885) in Bechuanaland and 1889-1896 in Mashonaland.

Maund was one of three officers who Lobengula should put on notice that Britain had declared Bechuanaland a British protectorate. He recognized the economic potential of Mashonaland and urged George Cawston a London financier, to seek mining rights. He also turned to Lord Gifford, who already had significant mining and mineral rights in North Bechuanaland, and tried this concession after Mashonaland expand.

Maund went to Bulawayo to negotiate the terms. Cecil Rhodes had to know about it and quickly sent its own delegation, consisting of Charles Rudd, Rochfort Maguire and Frank Thompson. On October 30, 1888 gave the Governor Robinson (later with a large number of shares of the British South Africa Company rewarded ) and Sir Sydney Shippard embellished political excuses and Rhodes got the - later Rudd Concession mentioned - mining and mineral rights.

Maund challenged the concession and went with two of Lobengula Indunas to London by Queen Victoria on the questionable procedure Cecil Rhodes to report and ask them for advice and support. Maund and his delegation came back with a letter from the Secretary of State for Colonial Questions Lord Knutsford to Bulawayo, warned of Lobengula caution. Rhodes now sought to ally all parties to the goal of obtaining a Royal Charter. Maund, who had to support the new approach so aroused the suspicion Lobengula. The situation was relieved by the arrival of Dr. Jameson, who was able to announce that the Royal Charter was granted and conveyed the further letters from the Colonial Secretary. Maund played no political role more and took care of the development of Salisbury.

Maund was married to Elenora Maund and had a born in Salisbury on 12 April 1895 daughter Cecily Elenora Niele Maund, at whose baptism Cecil John Rhodes and Leander Jameson acted as godfather.
