Edward Benson (bishop)

Edward White Benson (* July 14, 1829 in Birmingham, England; † October 11, 1896 in Hawarden, Flintshire ) was from 1883 until his death, Archbishop of Canterbury.

Life

Benson was born the son of a chemist in Birmingham. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1852. At the Rugby School in Warwickshire began his career in the same year. Shortly thereafter he was a deacon before he was ordained a priest in 1857. Prince Albert appointed him in 1859 to the Master of Wellington College in Berkshire, which was built in honor of Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington.

From 1872 to 1877 he served as head of the Lincoln Cathedral from 1877 to 1882 and was the first bishop of Truro. In 1880 he founded the Truro High School for girls.

On October 11, 1896 Benson died during a visit to the four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone of a heart attack. He was buried in a grave historicizing high in the nave of the Cathedral of Canterbury. In Trinity College, Cambridge, is a memorial plaque to him.

Benson was with Mary Sidgwick, sister of Henry Sidgwick, married and had six children: Margaret, Mary Eleanor, Martin, Arthur Christopher, Edward Frederic Robert and Hugh.
