Edward Haight (politician)

Edward Haight ( born March 26, 1817 in New York City; † September 15, 1885 in Westchester, New York ) was an American politician. Between 1861 and 1863 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Edward Haight was born about two years after the end of the British - American War in New York City and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools and worked at a young age in an office ( counting house ). Later he was a wholesaler of dry goods ( dry goods), followed banking transactions. In 1850 he moved to West Chester. He was director of the National Bank of New York. Then he founded in 1856 the Bank of the Commonwealth of New York City and was its president until 1870.

Politically he belonged at that time to the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1860 for the 37th Congress Haight was the ninth constituency of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John B. Haskin on March 4, 1861. In 1862 he was a candidate for the Republican Party for the 38th Congress. After an unsuccessful election, he retired after March 3, 1863 from the Congress.

After his conference time he sat on the boards of several banks and insurance companies. He died on September 15, 1885 in West Chester and was then buried in the Trinity Church Cemetery in New York City.
