Edwards family

The Chilean family Edwards has produced a number of entrepreneurs in the banking sector and the media, writer and diplomat.

Family History

The ancestor George ( " Jorge " ) Edwards Brown emigrated in 1804 as a ship's doctor from the UK and had Scottish ancestors. His son, Agustín Edwards Ossandon invested as well as his father in the silver mines. He founded several banks, participated in the construction of the first railways in Chile, commodity trading operation. At the time of his death he had earned 25 million pesos, and was the world's most important copper dealer.

With the purchase of Chile 's oldest still existing and most influential newspaper El Mercurio by Agustín Edwards Ross Edwards, the family was able to extend its economic and political influence. The Edwards are known to the 21st century for its important role in the banking sector (eg Banco Edwards Citi ) and as the owner of many Latin American newspapers and media.

  • María Edwards McClure de Errazuriz (1893-1972), sister of AE McClure was as diplomats widow in Paris with the Resistance. For the rescue of Jewish children, she was honored as Righteous Among the Nations
